When designing the Old City Hotel, located in the neighborhood of the same name in Knoxville, TN, the most important aspect of the project was relating form with function. The two primary programs of the space include the hotel and a restaurant, and analysis into the aspects that create positive outcomes from these programs ultimately led to the location and shape of this building. By using grasshopper scripts and mapping out the neighborhood, we created a space through the process of intentional 'voxels'.
Voxels, or vocalized pixels, were a programmatic concept to place cubic boxes in spaces which correspond to the needs of the program. By imputing existing locations and aspects of the neighborhood which correspond the most with the assigned program, I was able to create a simple form that would best allow for said program to commence in a positive outcome. From then, I was able to create a more complex form and spatially arrange the
building into what would become its final form.
