Point-Access Block Housing, also known as Single stair housing, is a practice in which multi-family dwelling units are housed together in a single stair building. popular in many European countries, most building codes in the United States restrict this practice. For this project, we wanted to challenge the codes set and highlight the ways in which these types of buildings can maximize efficiency in limited space.
Located in Denver's capitol hill neighborhood, we designed this space with the intent of housing young professionals starting out their careers. We used a combination of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units to allow for a maximum number of units per floor. A large central courtyard, shared balcony spaces, and a cantilevered gathering space help create a sense of community for people to connect and network, while a prominent bike storage room and close access to public transportation encourage sustainable transportation practices and eliminate a need for private vehicles in the apartments.
