Arriving in the town of South Pittsburg, Tennessee, visitors will be greeted by the Unity Center, a
cultural center devoted to past, present, and future of the quaint town. Guests enter through a central
courtyard which features a tribute to those who lived in the towns segregated past, serving as a
reminder that the center is a dedicated space for all people to gather. A large, shaded interior gallery
space allows for a multitude of functions, including exhibitions, large parties, lectures, etc. in an
environment that prevents direct sunlight from damaging/irritating the viewer's interest. A kitchen
located across from the gallery enables caterers to prepare food on site. On the second floor, a large
balcony space overlooking the gallery provides 270° views of downtown South Pittsburg, the
Tennessee River, and the mountains in the distance, as well as an additional view of the courtyard. The
office space features two private offices for those who work on site, as well as a large conference
room which overlooks downtown that can be booked for meetings. In all, the Unity Center is meant to
function as a space in which people can join together while honoring the town’s past, present and
future.
